Prevent & Protect
Many important health conditions develop over years. There may therefore be opportunities to identify modifiable risks earlier and take sensible action.
But prevention should not mean indiscriminate testing.
Before testing
Every investigation should begin with a clear question rather than a habit or a package.
If the result would not alter what happens next, it may not be worth doing.
Including what the possible limitations are, and what an unclear finding would mean.
Investigations
Considered where it could add useful information.
How the body is handling energy, over time.
Long-standing expertise, applied where it is relevant.
Chosen for a reason, not gathered for completeness.
Where a question genuinely needs a picture to answer it.
Where history suggests it may matter.
When not to test
More information can sometimes create uncertainty rather than resolve it.
An important part of good health stewardship is therefore recognising when an investigation is unlikely to add meaningful value.
No test answers everything, and some raise new questions.
Additional information can obscure the picture rather than clarify it.
Knowing when not to test is part of looking after someone well.
